Wednesday evening update

Jason had a tiring day - tiring enough that he slept rather than do his last 2 rehab sessions. He continues to make small improvements, and is starting to acknowledge that he may have indeed had a head injury, since he sees that he cannot do some things that he thinks he ought to do. He is still confused about a lot of things, but he sure doesn't act confused - he is incredibly articulate.

One thing that would help, I think, would be for us to be able to tell him some details about what happened, but none of us really knows. If you were there, and can shed some light, please give me a call at 277-4264 (evenings) or 255-7559 (days).

thanks,

Steve

  2. Steve, I was in the race and am on the same Cookies team as Jason, but did not see the actual accident.

I'll share what I do know, maybe it's a tiny bit helpful. My family and I were riding a bike in the tandem category just behind the group that included Jason. His group was very large and would have stretched across the width of the road.

He crashed just after the first of three big hills on the course. So was about 1/4 done with the first lap. He would have been with the group up to the corner before the hill, likely turned the corner and went up a long hill with everyone else pretty much shoulder to shoulder, but not moving very fast. He would have been very out of breath at the top of the long hill that is maybe 1/2 mile long (?). Just at the top the group splits up and the lead riders will often try to break away and everyone struggles to stay together.

There are some rolling downhills just after the crest of the hill. It was on the second or so of these slight downhills that Jason crashed. He would have been going quite fast at this point and likely around several other riders, but no longer in the huge group. From experience I can say he would have been tired and recovering from the hill as everyone sped down and worked hard to stay together in the wind.

I don't know what happened at the moment of the crash, maybe someone else was right there and can comment. I went buy Jason on my tandem when he was already on the ground and the great volunteer people from the follow car and other bikers were circled around him holding his head and neck steady and he was on his back. I think his helmet was on at this point. They said EMS was already called and there was nothing else we could do. We moved on to make everything clear. A bit down the road we saw the first of multiple responding vehicles moving towards Jason.

Sorry I couldn't provide more details. Best of luck to Jason and all of you who are supporting him we're all thinking of him. You can email me if it's useful at charles.hamilton(((at)))gmail(((dot)))com.

    Best,

    -Charles
